Eleven

At least he’d gotten his foot back in the door. After the other night, he feared she would never talk to him again. She had been so uptight, downright angry actually, when his cell phone had rung and he’d had to go.

Until then she’d been in rare form, shaking her flame-red hair about her face and grinning devilishly from time to time.

But after that call she had turned cold and unresponsive, as though she were suddenly revolted by him. That change in attitude had dealt him quite a wallop, making him wonder if he’d fooled himself into thinking that there was “something” between them.

Now, however, he felt better, back on a little steadier ground, although with someone who was as volatile as Katherine, one never knew what was going to happen next. That was part of her charm.

He smiled as he kicked back in his chair at the office, thinking of their conversation. For a second he’d gotten her goat when he’d mentioned coming to the trunk show. His eyes suddenly drifted to the invitation in front of him.

He wondered if Katherine herself was going to model any of those frothy garments.

Just thinking about that turned him on, and his libido responded accordingly, forcing him to change positions to relieve the discomfort behind his zipper. Good Lord, but he was a mess.

Still, he was anticipating seeing her that evening. He eyed his sermon notes on his desk and knew he should be concentrating on them, not Katherine.

But she had bewitched him from the first moment she’d walked into the hardware store, her upthrust breasts, great legs and luscious hips swaying in perfect rhythm.

Had he ever felt this way about Molly? He was sure that he had, but it seemed so long ago that he couldn’t recall any of those tumultuous feelings. But Katherine—she was a different matter altogether. She absolutely sizzled, and in turn made him sizzle.

Suddenly irritated with his thoughts, Bryce lunged out of the chair and walked to the window. The morning sun was bright and the air outside cool and crisp.

A perfect day for making love in front of the fireplace.

He could understand how easy it would be to curse. Sometime he wished he could. For him that wasn’t the answer. While he was a minister who tried to speak and live God’s word as best he could, he was still a man with human needs and desires.

And he needed Katherine Mays. He wanted Katherine Mays. In his bed. Bryce sucked in a deep breath, then forced it out as he lifted his head and stared at the sky as if searching for help.

None seemed forthcoming, at least not that he was hearing, which increased his frustration. He didn’t need this aggravation in his life right now, especially not when the church was about to embark on an aggressive building program. All his efforts and time should be buried in his work, in seeing that the Lord’s will was carried out.

Yet he couldn’t control how he felt. Yes, he could, he told himself with brutal honesty.
